The current shortage of donors mean that people needing transplants have to wait a long time (months to years) before they can receive the transplants they need, and many do not live to receive them. However, with the current research going on in stem cell research, theoretically in the future, a technician can take some somatic cells from a person, apply a procedure on them to turn them into a stem cell (pluripotent) state, coax the resulting stem cells to develop into a full grown organ, and transplant the organ into the person who gave the cell sample in the beginning. This method could potentially be much faster, less dependent on luck, and rejection-free since the person's own genetic material was used to create the organ.
